What does it mean to Rope Up?

Rope Up - verbal phrase : to attach to one another for safety

We believe relationships can significantly impact our personal and professional success. We use the “rope up” metaphor to communicate the importance of this concept to our students and trainees. We regularly ask the question, “Who’s on your rope?”.

The people on your rope are who you call when you have something to celebrate, when you need advice, when you’re stuck, or are in need of any other support. In life, sometimes we feel as though we are standing on the edge of a cliff, ready to jump. The people you have on your rope are the ones who are ready to hold on, the ones who help reel you back in from the edge. Most of us have family and friends on our rope, some of us might even have a mentor. Those people might not know how to support you in every situation, though. Having people who you can depend on for advice related to your career is crucial to preventing burnout and achieving your professional goals. We encourage having someone on your rope who is more experienced in the field, such as a supervisor or trainer and also having peers, people who are close to the same point in their career as you. It is always our hope that the professionals we work with will leave with someone new on their rope.
